3. Butterfly Swirl
Third variation in the Hug of Hearts series. This pattern uses a half stitch edge to fill the wider edge. Place pin at A, hang two passives and one worker, work to second pin, add another two pairs at new pin. Add two pairs at the next two pins, following the zigzag lines.
Magic threads can be placed on the four starting pins for the joining of the descending swirl to sew into, or use a crochet hook/lazy Susan. Eight passives and a worker. Work cloth stitch through the two outer and inner passives, the center passives are worked in half stitch. Twist the worker before working the half stitch pairs. On the smallest pattern, the pins are very close on the inner edge, use alternate pins to work around the same pin twice if you wish.
Add two pairs at each of the first two tally pins. Work these tallies before continuing with the trail to avoid having to make tallies in a restricted space. Use a windmill crossing (cloth stitch using each pair as one thread) pin the center, and make the second two tallies. Tie a single overhand knot with the worker and the nearest passive to hold the tally while it waits to be taken into the opposite edge. If using a featured colour for the tallies, a magic thread is advised to avoid the colour having to go into the trail.

Remove pairs as the trail narrows. If using a coloured passive as shown in the photo, cloth stitch a white center pair through the coloured passive to the outer edge where a white pair can be removed without affecting the flow of the half stitch.
Use the two remaining pairs to make a sewing over the center join of the butterfly and knot off.
