Hug of Heart 6. Blossom Heart

6. Blossom Heart

This Blossom Heart features a ground made of plaits and picots often seen in Honiton and Bedfordshire laces.

The patterns are 4, 6 and 8 cm across at the widest point.  The 4cm suits a 28 to 34 wpc thread. Add more passives for finer threads, add some sparkle, colour thread for fun.

This pattern uses a two pair edge, often called a ‘pin under 4’ edge.    Pairs - approx 26.  There is a coloured passive pair and extra worker twists between the 3 passives on the top heart, and I used half stitch on the painted heart.  A Pin under Four edge gives a visually smaller finished piece although the outer pins are in the same place. The two twists before the edge pin on the worker pairs allow fewer passives to be used because the twists replace a pair.  Usually, a pin under 4 edge will have pins slightly further out to allow for this.

The Blossom ground can be made in either the Bedfordshire or Honiton manner, they will be other variations which will work.

***A video will follow.

This Blossom Heart has a half stitch edge and fewer blossoms.  This was an experiment with Inktense paints by Derwent, UK.  These are water soluble ink blocks or pencils.  I laid the dampened heart on a damp tissue.  Using a palette, I activated and mixed the colours with water and dabbed the tip of the brush on the picots with a tiny dot of orange in the center.  The green colour was made thinner and I built up the colour around the edge and the bars between the blossoms.  To finish, I laid the heart between tissue and ironed it till dry.  I have not tested longevity of this process, only experimental at this stage.

In the Hug of Hearts series there are 24 designs which can be adapted further with your own choices.  See my youtube video for starting, edge variations, threads and alternative stitches domonstrated on the Border Heart.
