Winding Lace Bobbins with a Captive String - VIDEO

This method secured the string to the table, leaving both hands free to hold the thread and the bobbin in separate hands. Traditionally, both the thread and the string are held in the same hand, this way, only the thread is held.

This works with most bobbins, even spangled ones, maybe not as easy with tiny Honiton bobbins.

The string (I used no 10 crochet thread) can be laid across, or top to bottom on any table. I used bulldog clips to secure the string at each end but it could be tied to table legs. The string is loose enough to be lifted 10cm off the table in the middle. (my string was 1.20m long) Wind the start of the bobbin, clockwise. Put the tail of the bobbin under the string, draw it around and up, so there is a twist of string facing each way around the narrow bit of the handle, around the middle is best. The bobbin is held in either hand, faces either way depending on your preference. One direction will unwind the bobbin, the other will wind it. Test the direction before starting, it may take a couple of goes to get the hang of it, when you have, it is easy to get some speed up! Adjust the tension by lifting, or lowering the hand holding the bobbin. If the string slips, lift the bobbin.
